DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
Imagine a ten-year-old perched beside the bleachers at school, nose-deep in a book. While the rest of the world surrounded her, she was engrossed in a land filled with dragons, magic, and hope. Despite feeling so far-fetched, there’s something so incredible about a world that allows us to believe it’s real, even just for a second. When I first started writing Fortune’s Fool, I wanted to bring to life the feeling of a fantasy book onto the big screen.
Fortune’s Fool follows the intricate plots that make up the empire of Hirethlyn. Our story springs into action when Princess Carina murders her parents, spurring her kingdom into chaos. For the kingdom's safety, Duke Kussan places a large bounty for Carina’s capture to have her answer for her crimes. Meanwhile, bounty hunter Revna has been assigned to capture Carina and bring her back to her patron in exchange for her freedom. Forced to work together to survive dangerous foes, Carina and Revna’s once tumultuous relationship thaws into an intricate connection that causes them to confront their feelings. Simultaneously, a volatile struggle for the crown ensues in two different kingdoms as sacrifices are made to ensure power. Weaving together seemingly separate storylines, each character undergoes what it means to be human.
Integrating high fantasy and medieval world-building elements, I drew inspiration from some of my favorite media, such as Arcane and Narnia. Designed to ultimately become a limited series of nine episodes, including a two-part finale, Fortune’s Fool envelops the viewer in a land of deceit, love, and power.
I wrote this story for the ten-year-old who dreamed of fantastical adventures and creating her own stories. Then, I continued writing this story for the teenager who didn’t get to see any queer representation within fantasy and felt invisible. Now, I finish this story for my current self and to bring my vision to life.
